Bad Science: Castrol Magnatec
These are intelligent molecules
No they aren’t. Molecules they are, intelligent they are not.
They know where to go
No. They don’t. They “know” as much as a rock “knows” which way to fall down.
When they are needed, they instantly respond going to the parts of the engine that need it most.
Their “instant response” happens whether or not they are “needed.” Because its a friggin liquid. It gets pushed round the engine. How “intelligent” is that? When they are needed, they move around the engine. When they aren’t needed, guess what? Those molecules move around the engine just the same! WOW!
Shielding it in a layer of active protection.
… I like the idea of “active protection.” Make me think of pre-emptive defense, locking up people who are likely to become criminals, invading countries likely to become hostile towards you or something. Thug molecules.
God, bad science in adverts is infuriating. Coming soon: Gilette FUSION!!!!!
How to waste a weekend
So, this evening I’m going to eat a pizza, watch Bremner Bird and Fortune, then deliverance, and then go to bed. Tomorrow I’ll probably get up late, read through my notes and then add a thousand words to my essay on Hegel’s Phenomenology. After that I’ll probably mess around on the internet and then go to bed again. Except I’ll probably skip the part about reading notes and writing essay…
So far today I have done nothing of note except walk to sainsbury’s to buy milk…
I’m currently reading Ilium by Dan Simmons and playing Dynasty Warriors on the PSP. I’m listening to Youngblood Brass Band and the I (heart) huckabees soundtrack…
Dobermann: Waste of my time
I wish I hadn’t just wasted 99 minutes watching Dobermann. It sucked. Quite a lot. I’d rather have watched Sars Wars: Bangkok Zombie Crisis
There’s nothing really to say about it. It’s just rubbish. Explosions, dodgy effects, poor story. Not really anything worth mentioning.
In other news I recently watch the Infernal Affairs Trilogy which are pretty good. The first one is the film The Departed is based on, so I kind of knew the story already from having seen that. (Infernal affairs has subtitles, so its easier to understand than the dodgy boston accents in Scorcese’s film…) The second one is a kind of prequel and it’s great. The third is a little weaker, but it’s still good if a little confusing at times. It takes place before and after the first two…
A maths puzzle: Bertrand’s Paradox and “random chords”
I was reading the wikipedia page for Bertrand’s Paradox and was wondering about the various ways one can pick a “random” chord on a circle. I found this on the discussion page:
- pick a random point inside the circle and a random direction, make a chord in the direction through the point
- pick a random point inside the circle and a point on the circle, join them up and extend into a chord
- pick a random diameter and a distance away from the diameter, draw a chord parallel to the diameter at that distance. (there are 2 chords in each case, but allow the distance to be negative and then pick an “up” let positive distance mean take the chord “above” the diameter etc)
- pick a random diameter and a random point inside the circle, draw a chord through the point perpendicular to the diameter
- pick a random diameter and a random point on the circle… etc
As well as the 3 methods listed on the page itself, this is quite a selection of methods. So which are equivalent? I imagine that each of those reproduced above is equivalent to one of the three listed on the page, but I haven’t really thought about which are equivalent to which…
Things that annoy me
Here’s a list of things I find annoying;
* People who talk really loudly on the phone when you’re on the bus or in a bookshop or something
* People who underline things or otherwise write comments in library books. OK, Fermat did it and people still know who he is hundreds of years later, but let’s face it, underlining stuff and putting exclamation marks in the margin isn’t exactly in the same league…
*Jade Goody.
That’s all for now. I know I will add to this list lots. I hate lots of things.
